Make a Snare Drum → Play a Snare Drum
Part 7 (The Peruvian Piccolo)
(10プライ・ メープル 13" x 3. 5" 8 lug)
Piccolo Snare Drum (10 ply Black Diamond Wrap)
This drum is particularly special, with an equally special story.
It was designed by my good friend Marco in Peru.
Although I am always excited about every drum I build this one had me shaking all over.
"OK the story goes something like this"
A couple of months ago Marco contacted me and tells me he wants a shallow and small snare to add to his kit. It not only has to look awesome but sound awesome. We decided to tackle the later first. The main point of focus I felt Marco had was on the depth and he wanted the drum to look thin.
Somewhere between 3~ 4.5 inches. Hmmm “A Piccolo” I thought. Now I’m getting real interested in this project. "In addition to making it thin, let’s make the diameter smaller than a standard snare” Marco tells me with enthusiasm. I can tell he is getting really excited about this project now, and so am I.
But how thin and how wide? We start to ponder. I am trying to keep in mind that this new snare is going to have to fit into his Double Bass Tama Super Star Kit.
"It’s gotta be at least 12 or 13 inches Marco reckons,
12”~13”, I think, Hmmm a “Soprano” Oooooohhh
a “Piccolo Soprano” now I am really firing.
After several discussions Marco decides 3.5 " x 13 inches and asks me what I reckon. I am just YEAHHHhhhhh for sure, lets do it.
Next decision, The Finish?? We discuss a few different options and Marco decides on Wrap. "Black Diamond" as it should fit in well with his all Black Kit. To finish it off chrome hardware. Should give it that bling when the light hits it.
As building this drum step by step and seeing it come to life, I could see it was going to look really sweet, but at the time I never realised that this drum was going to be the best looking and sounding snare drum I had ever made. After completion I just had to try it. (check the tuning) It sounded so awesome I wasn't sure I could let it go to Peru. But although I had built this drum, it was Marco's who really made this drum come alive. The passion and vision had always originated from him. It had always been his.
Thank you for sharing your passion with me Amigo. It was an honour to build this drum for you.
