Make a Snare Drum → Play a Snare Drum

Snare Drum (10 ply maple)
When designing this drum the main objective or the focus was really just on the size. Believe it or not, until now I had never played a Deep Snare so I thought it was about time I stopped wasting time and get cracking. In most cases snare drums with a depth of 6" to 10" are commonly know as Deep Snares. One of my favourite drummers, Ian Paice (Deep Purple's Amazing Drummer) plays a 6.5" deep snare made from Steel. Given this fact I decided 6.5" was a good place to start
However other than just being deep I wanted this drum to look deep so decided to use fairly long and thin Tube Lugs (as opposed to shorter bulkier lugs) as I feel this tends to better highlight the depth.
For finishing I wanted to use a color that would make this drum sly looking. I decided on Silver Grey which I feel gives the drum a bit of a split personality depending on the light. In a well lit room or direct sun light it is quite bright looking, but in the studio it has a much darker and harder look. It could almost be mistaken for a different drum.
As for the sound please stay tuned. This week I will be taking this drum into the sound lab and putting it through a work out, at which time I look forward to reporting my findings.
